Welcome To Mahoosuc Guide Service
Mahoosuc Guide Service is a small family run business with over twenty years of experience. All of our trips are owner guided and a high percentage of our clients are returning as friends. Polly and Kevin are professional year round guides, equally comfortable poling a canoe up the Allagash or driving a dog team across the sea ice of Hudson Bay. Mahoosuc is unique in that we make much of the equipment we use on our guided trips, such as cedar canvas canoes, ash dog sleds and maple paddles. We have found the traditional equipment and materials we use to be durable, functional and in many ways preferable to today's high technology outdoor equipment. The craftsmanship that goes into our equipment is an extension of the care we put into each of our trips. We have traveled extensively in the north with the Cree and Inuit and many of the techniques we use for northwoods and tundra travel were developed by them.

Mahoosuc Guide Service offers a wide variety of activities for all seasons and levels of experience. Our trips are not a test of endurance. Although we travel a certain distance each day, ample time is available for natural history, exploring and relaxing. Group size is normally small, four to eight, to insure a quality experience and to accommodate individual interests.

We believe in the intrinsic value of wilderness experiences. Our philosophy of guiding is to respect and accept the wilderness; not to compete against it. We provide our clients with the opportunity to learn about themselves while learning new skills and to become rejuvenated by experiencing life in more elemental terms. An additional benefit of our cultural trips is the opportunity to live and travel with a Native subsistence hunter's family through their ancestral homeland.

We have been fortunate over the years to have been discovered and featured in periodicals such as Cross Country Skier, Mushing, Canoe, Canadian Geographic, Downeast, and a film for National Geographic Explorers Journal and PBS Made in Maine. As interest in our trips increases we remain committed to stay small, personal, and professional and owner guided.

Mahoosuc Guide Service is located in the Bear River Valley just north of Bethel, Maine. Our farm in the Mahoosuc Mountains affords us easy access to the wildest areas of Maine, New Hampshire and Canada.
